In a month, approximately 30 gallons of water can be lost from a dripping faucet or a running toilet which will significantly raise your water bill. These types of repairs are inexpensive and can save you lots of money in the long run. A cost-efficient tip: If your tub faucet is leaking, use a bucket to catch the water and pour it into your bowl to flush so you’re not wasting water.
Ever wonder how much water is wasted down the drain from a dripping faucet? What about several dripping faucets? There is no true scientific definition of how much water is a faucet drip but there is some suggestion after measuring a number of kitchen and bathroom dripping faucets that it is approximately a 1/4 milliliter (ml) in volume.
If we assume this number of 1/4 milliliter per drip is accurate, doing the math, one faucet dripping two times per minutes, adds up to about 70 gallons of water per year. That might seem insignificant, yet consider more faucets dripping and more frequently can add up to quite a flood. To truly say exactly how much water is wasted from a dripping faucet is impossible to tell for certain.
Doing some more math with the 1/4 of a milliliter in volume as an average, that adds up to around 15,140 per gallon of water. A faucet dripping once per second would fill a gallon bucket in four and a half hours. In that case, every day would be a waste of 5 gallons of water, and that is a total of around 2,080 gallons of water wasted per year. In summary, a leaky faucet may not seem much of a concern, yet, as time passes it can really add up, not to mention that smaller leaks typically turn into bigger leaks when left unattended.
Now, let’s scale the situation up to several faucets dripping in home and businesses in your neighborhood, or your city, or state. Think of all the leaky faucets and how much water is wasted every day. If you have a dripping faucet, we suggest do not let it drip forever. Take action to remedy it now, before it becomes a bigger plumbing problem.
